About the area |
Juneau is one of the largest cities in alaska with a population of more than 32,000. Alaska State museum has on display items from its huge collections. among the collections are historical objects representative of the Russian and American period, Alaska Native material, fine art collection of about 1,800 pieces and the natural history collection. In addition there is the Juneau-Douglas City museum with its permanent exhibits devoted to drilling and mining, Juneau's History of hydropower, outdoor recreation, politics, personalities and power and the United States Bureau of Mines. An interesting day can be spent touring the House of Wickersham which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. THis was the home of of Alaska's pioneer judge who was also a a statesman, author, historian and scholar. The Juneau Symphony presents concerts, including the Wild West Pops concert, in a season extending from October to June in different venues in the Juneau area. |
