About the area
Kake lies on Frederick sound, on Kupreonof island and at the edge of the Tebenkof Bay wilderness. One of the best ways to get this village is by Alaska Marine Highway ferry. The town has only nine streets. Kake is an Organized Village and has a federally recognized tribal government. Fisherman who come here have a chance at catching some nice size Halibut and Pacific Salmon. Black bear, moose, Sitka Black Tail deer and other wildlife inhabit the surrounding area. It's possible to catch a glimpse of a Black bear along Silver Spike Road Bridge or at Gunnuck Creek hatchery; but don't get to close to these guys. The town is also home to an up to date lodge. If you like to explore by foot or by mountain bike there are miles of logging road heading inland from the village. Experienced ocean kayakers can take a trip into Tebenkof Bay Wilderness, a remote bay system with hundreds of islands, small inner bays and coves. However, they should be prepared to handle a number of portages.
