About the area |
As can be expected this town of ten streets is named after the bay it sits on although it was named Askinuk or Askinaghamiut when it was first sighted around 1890. Income producing employment here is mostly seasonal with limited employment in the Winter. A large number of residents hold commercial fishing permits and a local cannery processes halibut and salmon. A number of residents produce hand crafted products such as grass baskets and ivory carvings. |
