LaFayette was founded in the 1840's. Pat Garrett the sheriff who killed Billy the Kid, was from LaFayette and he is remembered with the holding of his will at the Chambers County courthouse. Another Lafayette native, U.S. Congressman and Senator Thomas Heflin is remembered as the father of Motherâs Day. Lafayette is a great place to live if you love fishing. LaFayette is surrounded by four of the stateâs major lakes, which have excellent fishing and recreational facilities. Lake West Point is East of LaFayette. Lake Martin to the West is famous for its spotted bass fishing. Lake Harris a 40 minute drive North and has a reputation for great largemouth bass fishing. The Chambers County Public Lake and the LaFayette City Lake are near by.
