| About the area |
At one time Newton was serviced by steamboats traveling the Choctawhatchee river. During the Civil war the city was a center of local recruiting for the Confederate army and its Home Guard successfully defended the city from pro-Union forces. Reenactments of the Battle of Newton are staged annually by a local re-enactment group, the 15th Alabama. |
