About the area
For a historical perspective of the Civil War and slavery visit the Slavery and Civil War Museum. Here you will experience at times upsetting provocative side-by-side exhibits and a balanced presentation of both sides of a very controversial period in the history of America. The events leading up to the protest march from Selma to Montgomery in 1955 and subsequent events leading up to the registration of people of color are portrayed in the National Voting Rights museum. Each February the city celebrates the Bridge Crossing Jubilee to commemorate the Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March. The celebration includes a parade, a pageant, symposiums and music. A special feature of this event is the induction into the Voting Rights Hall of Fame.
