In the early 1800' a settler taking advantage of the large stands of pines established the Slocum Lumbar company in his name. He the then started a naval store and became the town's first postmaster. When the railroad came the town flourished. Some things stand the test of time; the Slocum Lumbar company is still in business. There are plenty of farms in the region and they display their produce at the annual Tomato Festival the third weekend of June. The locally grown scrumptious, ripened to their peak, tomatoes are picked right from the vine and a variety can be purchased at the festival.
