About the area |
Vernon was originally named Swayne but changed its name in the 1860's. The city has been suffering economic hard times that have their root in the sale of plantations to large timber interests, eliminating many jobs that had derived from farming; and the closing or relocation to other areas of the United States of the few textile factories that were located in the area in the early twentieth century.
