One would expect that in a city this size, close to 40 square miles, that there would be several major roads passing through it; such as US Hways 31 and 72 and SR's 2, 99, 127 and 251. IS 65 runs just to the East of the city. |

About the area |
Athens, which like many other cities was named for the city in Greece, was incorporated as a city early in the 19th century. At about the same time Athens State University was founded as the Athens Female Academy. This school offers thirty three majors in arts and sciences, business, and education leading to the Bachelor's degree and is part of the state university system. One of the incidents during the Civil war was the sacking of Athens. Major industries have been moving to Athens in recent years resulting in a diversification of the population from its former agricultural character. Free concerts are held the third Friday night from May to September on the lawn of the Limestone County Courthouse. |
