About the area
Tuskeegee was incorporated in the 1840's. The first law school in Alabama was establihed in this city. Well known are the group of African-American pilots who were trained at Tuskegee Army Air Field; the Tuskegee Airmen of World War II. Close to 1,000 were graduated and received their wings from this facility. Their achievments are commemorated by the Memorial Day Fly-In, a three day event held every Memorial Day Holiday weekend at Moton field. This event is attended by African-American pilots from just about every one of the continental United States. Tuskeegee is also the place where the famous George Washington Carver; scientist and educator taught and developed his theories on plant life. The Annual Carver Sweet Potato festival is held every Third Saturday in October in Tuskegee's town square. This festival celebrates Dr. George Washington Carver and his sweet potato research.
