About the area
Huntsville might well be considered the birthplace of the space age in the United States; for it was here that Werner von Braun and his team of German rocket scientists came to Redstone Arsenal to work on rocket design and construction resulting in contibutions to the Redstone, Gemini, and Apollo manned space programs. The U.S. Space and Rocket Center Museum is preserving Huntsville's heritage and the legacy of the United States space program at its U.S. Space & Rocket Center. The center has one of the most complete U.S. manned space flight hardware museums in the world. There are artifacts of the U.S. space program, hands-on interactive exhibits and space travel simulators. The North Alabama Railroad Museum, just East of Huntsville, is preserving railroad history and is a great place for those who love trains. They can inspect, photograph, and study the historic rail equipment, the small depot, and take a train ride.
