About the area |
People here say you won't want to leave once you come because of the friendly atmosphere and the avaiability of outdoor activities the year round. Where once was located the Aliceville POW camp for World War II enemy soldiers which held up to 6000 prisoners; now stands the Aliceville POW museum. In this building visitors can view paintings, letters, books, sculptures, wood crafting, pottery, musical instruments and photographs by German prisoners which reveal a vivid picture of life at Camp Aliceville. About 2 1/2 miles north of Aliceville, there is a different kind of prison; the state's first all-female federal prison. On the lighter side; residents can spend a pleasant afternoon in the city's Picard park.
Groundbreaking is scheduled Wednesday morning in west Alabama for The facility will be on 120 acres of a 650-acre site in southwest Pickens County, on Alabama 14.
