About the area
Three structures have borne the name Sumter County Courthouse. The first was a log structure sitting southwest of the present Courthouse Square. The second was constructed on the present site in the late 183o's. After it was was destroyed by fire at the beginning of the 20th century; the present building was bulit and is now listed in the National Register. The city's covered bridge is one of the oldest covered bridges in Alabama. You might call it the country's only travelling covered bridge. It was first built in the 1860's, as a bridge across the Sucarnoochee River in Livingston; then across the Alamuchee Creek on County Road 13, and then moved to UWA campus in 1971 by the Sumter County Historical Society.
