About the area |
The first settlers, other than Native Americans, came to the area around 1836. When the citizens of Magnolia realized in 1882 that the only operational railroad in the area passed North through McNeil and Waldo; they raised funds to build a branch from Magnolia to McNeil. Cotton was the primary contributor to the economy of the town but the completion of the spur drew other markets to the town and when timber interests to the South and a railroad line from that direction were developed, additional economic growth took place. There are murals on buildings around the courthouse square which tell the story of the town's heritage. The city is also home to Southern Arkansas University a school with an Agricultural and Horticultural farm which is open for tours. Logoly State park, to the Northeast has outdoor facilities such as group tent sites, a bathhouse with hot showers, pavilion, picnic sites, playground and trails.
