About the area |
Around 1902 a timber buyer from Ohio, hearing about the quality timber around Parkin, bought a mill located just South of the American Indian mound in what is now the archeological park. In the years between 1902 and 1904, moved his Ohio lumber company to Parkin and around 1906 the two merged to form a large cooperage and lumber company. The lumber which followed provided employment for many people in the area. The site, along the St. Francis river, where for 500 years a Mississippi Period, American Indian village was located is now the Parkin Archeological State park. A large platform mound can still be seen on the river bank An interpretive exhibit area and auditorium are located in the park visitor center. A nearby park area has a picnic area, playground and pavilion. While you are visiting this park you can can also tour the Northern Ohio Schoolhouse, circa 1910, which is the only one of fifteen of these one-room and two-room school houses still standing.
