| About the area |
Although Charleston was settled around the years 1843 and 1844, it experienced very little growth. When the city was designated as the county seat around 1898 at the same time as the the railroad reached the city; the population grew to above 600. The greatest growth in the city occurred when several coal mines opened in the area in the period from 1900 to 1920. Still the city's population grew to a scant number of approximately 730 although new jobs were created and wealth generated by the coal industry resulting in a building boom along Charleston's Main Street.
