| About the area |
The The Cairo and Fulton Railroad company first began construction in the late 1860's and when the bridge over the White river was completed in the Spring of 1873 a station was established at the Newport landing. One year later the Cairo and Fulton railroad merged with the St. Louis and Iron Mountain railroad of Missouri to become the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railroad company. The depot in Newport was completed around 1902. Eventually these railroads became part of the Union Pacific railroad which donated the depot to the city in the late 1990's. The Iron Mountain Railroad Depot was then restored to its 1943 appearance and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The depot houses train memorabilia and from time to time during the year special community events are staged there.
