Humphrey has an unusual way of keeping its past alive; the streets in town are named for the residents and farm owners of the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's, who inhabited the connecting parcel of land. A portion of the city lies in Arkansas county. Around 1882 the land, that is now Humphrey, belonged to a local farmer. However, the St. Louis Southwestern railroad surveyed the area for its line running between Stuttgart and Pine Bluff and placed a rail stop on the land. This stop rapidly grew into a settlement and the city was incorporated around 1905. Timber and cotton were the primary industries at the time and with its location on the railroad and electricity, growth of the town soon included a bank, cafe and seven stores.
