Winthrop District Court

SR 234 is the major road going through Winthrop.

Construction of the railroad was the main reason for Winthrop's existence and the depot and siding wwere named for the Native American land owner. The area grew as the land occupied by the railroad was given to the town and additional acreage was purchased from local landowners. Two brothers opened asawmill and operated a planning mill, a shingle mill and a grist mill. The first blacksmith shop, the first cotton gin and a three story grain mill soon followed. In the early 1900's Winthrop had hotels, a bakery, barber shop, meat market, ice house, telephone exchange, blacksmith shop, livery, sawmill, doctors, drug stores and a bank and the town added a river generated electric light system. The population has dwindled from the 1920's till now. Winthrop's School museum is in their old School House a two story brick schoolhouse building which in itself is an example of a rural school building in the early 20th century. The Museum room or the Veterans’ room has displays of artifacts, documents, and photographs depicting life in Winthrop from the 1880s to the present day. a collection of photographs, personal letters, uniforms, flags, and various newspaper clippings in the Veterans' room are a tribute to local veterans who served in conflicts from World War I to the Iraq War.
