| About the area |
A preacher who settled here and farmed on his land in the early 1850's founded the town in the 1880's which he first called Blythesville. Early on the economy of the town was spurred on by the large amounts of lumber harvested. This led to the establishment of sawmills and the importation of a large unruly population. When all the lumber had been harvested the town turned to agriculture at the beginning of the 20th century and farmers were drawn to the area by the fresh farmland and waterway management efforts. The town's economy grew even more with arrival of the railroad. The city also benefited from the cotton growing industry and the presence of a Strategic Air Command airbase. The base closed in the early 1990's but has reopened as the the Arkansas Aeroplex, the site for both aviation and non-aviation related businesses |
