A fifteen-foot mound built during the Mississippian Period which is located about two miles Southeast of Gosnell is evidence of the presence of various Native American tribes prior to any settlement by pioneers. With water all around it, Gosnell was a boat transportation route linking the settlement to the larger cities of Arkansas, Missouri, and Tennessee. The thriving commercial hunting and fishing business along Big lake could take advantage of the lake and the two bayous to the Mississippi River to ship pelts and packed fish. The settlement was still known as Chickasawba at the beginning of the 20th century.
