About the area |
Marked Tree is located between two rivers a quarter mile apart. As the last 30 miles of the Kansas City, Fort Scott and Memphis Railroad between Kansas City and Memphis were being built in the Spring of 1881; a railroad camp was moved over the newly laid tracks and established at the site of present day Marked Tree. It was first called Edwards. The railroad at this point had to be built on an elevated right of way or on trestles where possible in these "sunken lands", which took about 2 ½ years to complete. Since the settlers and the trappers and traders who came to the area, during this time, found they could send and receive mail at the railroad camp; the need for a permanent post office after the railroad was completed arose. The new name was then selected and Washington was petitioned to establish the post office which was in place when the first train to Memphis passed through in late 1883. The Marked Tree Delta Area museum is a small but interesting facility. The front of the museum is 1800s general store facade. As you enter it you will come into a replica of a small-town community hospital. There is also a history gallery that includes Indian pottery from the 13th century and telephone exhibits from the early 1900s.
