About the area
The city had its beginning as a result of the construction of Kansas City Southern railroad, which connected Kansas City, Missouri. with Port Arthur, Texas, when it was extended through a frontier town known as Hurrah City, which later became De Queen. The city was was named after a Dutch coffee merchant who helped finance the completion of the railroad. The pronunciation of his Dutch name was too difficult so it eventually was changed to its present name. A Kansas City businessman who was instrumental in obtaining the financing for the completion of the railroad a Kansas City businessman who was also president of Arkansas Townsite Company, which owned land around the settlement. The company had the area surveyed to mark off blocks, streets, and alleys for the town. When the sale of lots opened in the Spring of 1897 large crowds showed up to buy the lots, which were priced at $25 and up. At the end of the 19th century, a fire broke out in downtown De Queen which destroyed a large number of businesses that had been housed in wooden buildings. The town then worked to build a brick factory and worked to undertake the rebuilding of the town with these new materials. At the end of the first decade of the 20th century, the railroad built a roundhouse and shop at DeQueen and offered passenger service until the late 1960's. The Sevier County Historical museum, located at the at the North entrance of Herman Dierks Park, has exhibits such as historical artifacts, an antique village with miniature replicas of early county landmarks and a 1940's house. The exhibits include the 1940's house whiich is like a time capsule of the 1940's, a Children's area, the DeQueen area with its pictures and artifacts from the old businesses and the courthouse including an old rolltop desk, the Harold Mabry area displays paintings, scupltures and writings of the late Harold Mabry of Sevier County, the city of Paraclifta and the Civil War, the city of Lockesburg, Native American artifacts, Salute to our Local Veterans, Sevier County schools and village complex which has small, replica structures containing related artifacts that are representative of the buildings and furnishings found in DeQueen about the time of its founding
