About the area |
It's not certain how the city got it's original name of Jennie's Colony, but there wer people living in cabins in the area around 1840. Around 1860, a Tennessee business came to the area and bought several hundred acres of what was considered "Swamp Land" property. Upon his death his son inherited the land and sometime after 1869, when the Missouri Pacific railroad came along they negotiated for land to run their tracks through his farm land. He donated the site for the depot and additional property of right-of-way to the railroad company. He then had the town, now called McCrory for his family name, laid out and sold hundreds of plots to settlers. With all these newcomers and the railroad, soon stores and businesses were established along the main street of the newly laid out town.
