Punta Gorda is located at a tip of Charlotte county where the Peace river meets Charlotte Harbor. A bridge connects the city to the city of Charlotte Harbor along the Tamiami Trail. Punta Gorda was once a stop along the Atlantic Coast Railway Line. Its depot is still standing and is recogmnized on the list of United States Register of Historical Places.
