Two large sites in the area are draws to many Floridians. Lake Okeechobee with its over 4600 square miles of lake bed and over 730 square miles of lake is the second largest freshwater lake in the United States. It provides many boating and fishing opportunities. The Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge encompasses over 147,000 acres and includes 221 square miles of the Everglades area home to the American Alligator and many species of birds. The refuge offers walking trails (including boardwalks through swamp),a canoe trail, a bike trail, boat ramps, a fishing platform, observation towers and a butterfly garden.
