Shalimar has a very small population but the populace enjoys a relatively high median middle income. The Shalimar Golf and Country club features a semiprivate 18 hole 6765 yard championship golf course. There are two neighborhood parks in the city; Cherokee park and Meigs park which is named for Clifford Meigs who founded Shalimar in the 1940's as a residential area for military personnel. Eglin Air Force base is to the North of the city. This Air base is an Air Armament Center. It occupies a major piece of real eatate in the Southern part of the county and most of its acreage is in Okaloosa county.
