Corning District Court

This court may be referred to as the district court of Adams county in the Fifth judicial district of Iowa. There is only one major road in this county , US 34.

There are some interesting things to see around Corning. The structure which served as a county jail and sheriff's quarters until around 1955 is now known as the House of History and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Displays in this building are representative of the history of the area and in the basement the dining room and kitchen used by the sheriff and family are still intact well as the original dungeon room with its barred windows. The French Icarian Village is a living history museum which replicates the life of the French Icarians, a communal group which came to this area from France around 1848. The village now consists of a restored Icaria cemetery, 1860 one-room school and 1878 refectory. Within these buildings are artifacts of these people. None other than that great nighttime TV personality, Johnny Carson, was born here and the house he was born in has been restored and considered a Corning historic site. The Corning Opera house which was built around 1902 on the site of a bank, general merchandise store and photo gallery destroyed by fire, functioned as a as a live stage theater and later became a movie theater. It is being restored to hold performances in its beautiful auditorium once again.
