About the area
You might be interested in visiting a site which is intertwined with the history of Jackson county. The restored Hurstville Lime Kilns were once the scene of a thriving industry in this county. An entrepreneur acme to the area around 1870 to take advantage of the limestone formations along the banks of the Maquoketa River. He erected his kilns to produce powder lime which at one point reached a level of 8000 barrels of lime a day. However, with his death around 1915 and his son around 1930 and the demand for lime by the building industry declining, the kilns shut down. Maquoketa has mysterious caves, unique land formations and winding waterways to explore. The city has a group of historic homes to tour, dating back to the 1800's, which are on the National Register of Historical Places. Among them are John Lake House, Perham House, Greek Revival House, Henry Taubman House, the Seneca Williams Mill and the James Decker hotel.
