About the area
When large quantities of gold were discovered in Grimes creek, which is part of the Boise basin, around 1862 large numbers of treasure hunters flocked to the area including Idaho city. After one year as many as twenty thousand people were living in the area with close to 6000 in the Idaho city area alone. At first Idaho city was known as Bannock City or West Bannock. The mining of gold was so intense that buildings in the town were raised up on pilings so that mining could take place in the earth underneath them. There are still structures in town which are reminiscent of the gold rush days. The Boise Basin museum has exhibits of artifacts from the Gold Rush, Pon Yam House and the Chinese laborers. There is also a bottle collection, artifacts an memorabilia of pioneer life, an 1860's village and videos portraying the history, restoration and preservation of the gold camps.
