About the area
In addition to the Native Americans who had inhabited this area; mountain men and fur traders trapped here in the early 1800's and settlers started coming in the 1860's. In the Winter of 1913, the Idaho Legislature created Gooding county by partitioning Lincoln county and naming it for, who else but, a Gooding. This one was a pioneer sheep rancher, early mayor of the city of Gooding and later Idaho Governor and U.S. Senator. The city of Gooding was established on land owned by this same gentleman; although the Oregon Short Line railway station built at this site around 1882 was originally named Toponis. Exercise facilities in this city consist of a municipal golf course, a swimming pool, softball diamonds, tennis courts, fairgrounds, city parks and exercise facilities. The Hagerman Valley Historical museum is small but it is crammed with artifacts, photographs, old newspapers and family stories. The museum has on display a replica of the 3 million year old Hagerman Horse, other fossils, arrowhead collections of tribes in the Hagerman valley, items from Fremont’s 1845 expedition, items left by immigrant travelers on the Oregon Trail, 18th and 19th century agricultural items, records from the Salmon Falls Mining district and original editions of noted Idaho writer Vardis Fisher’s works. The kids will enjoy a day's outing at the The Hagerman National Fish Hatchery where over 1 million steelhead and close to 130,000 Rainbow trout are produced each year.
