Owyhee County Historical Society museum in Murphy has some interesting exhibits. The entry exhibit explores 150 years of the county through the display of photos, paintings and historical excerpts. There is a display of saddles and the stuffed remains of longhorn cattle. The museum also has on display a rare collection of old printing presses. The first county to be established by the first territorial legislature; Owyhee county was founded around 1863. The county seat was moved around a bit, first residing in Ruby, then Silver City before its final location in Murphy. In early 1863 Silver City was the location of the discovery of gold and the region went on to produce millions of dollars of gold and silver until the early 1900's. Things are not crowded in the town of Murphy, only about 100 people live there. All that remains of Ruby are some foundations and the white stone markers in its cemetery. Some buildings remain standing in Silver city including the hotel which is still in operation. |
