About the area

The City began in 1796 with a ferry company along the Ohio River. It was named for Charles Biggs, the surveyor who mapped out the area. It was an agricultural community of about 900 people until the 1940's when the Indiana Army Munitions Plant arrived and the population swelled to over 13,000 in a very short time. Now Charlestown Start Park occupies this site. Population is 6,500. All high school students are provided with a computer. There is an industrial park and a State Park on the Ohio River where you might see a bald eagle. St. Catherine's Hospital serves the community.
