Elkhart's hydroelectric dam built in 1867 across the St. Joseph River still provides electric power. It has the largest railyard east of the Mississippi River. The municipal airport proved charter service. It's a manufacturing community in the fields of housing, recreational vehicles, musical instruments and pharmaceuticals.
