If you want to go somewhere from Medicine Lodge you do well to go on US 281 but for points East and West of town it's best to take US 160 which intersects with 281 in the Southern part of town.

About the area

The Kansas State guards were organized by the governor of Kansas in 1874 to protect the state's citizens from the Indian outbreaks. To secure the area of Medicine Lodge, a stockade was built by the militia and citizens. How times have changed; this protected area is now the center of the business district. To celebrate the Peace Agreement between the U.S. Government and the Five Tribes of the Plains, which ended the need for the guard and the stockade, the city holds a reenactment of this momentous occasion. The citizens of this city are treated to two rodeos each year. The Kansas High School rodeo is held each September in the Jimmy Packard arena and the Medicine Lodge Pageant arena. The Kansas Championship Ranch rodeo is held late each September at the Medicine Lodge Pageant arena.
