About the area |
One of the more interesting sights to be seen is the Underground World which remains from the underground businesses and walkway that once lay below the downtown. The German immigrants who settled here in the 1870s; produced a town layout which included underground walkways beneath the sidewalks with another whole set of businesses below the ground level stores including 11 saloons. Eventually most of the most of the walkways were closed off and eventually the city filled most of them with sand. However three sections remain open and the Ellinwood Museum Association coducts tours of these which are under the the Dick building and house a harness maker, barber, and bathhouse underground. |
