Hiawatha is located between the Kickapoo, Iowa and Sac & Fox Indian Reservations. It may not be unique to name streets the way Hiawatha has but nevertheless it pays tribute to the Native American peoples who lived in the area. The East-West streets which are located North of Oregon street are named for Indian tribes that lived North of the Oregon Trail and streets South of Oregon street for tribes that lived South of the trail. Hiawatha lake, located South of town, is a great place to relax and fish or picnic and play a little Volleyball at the sand facilities.
