About the area
Augusta lies in the prairie above where the Whitewater and the Walnut rivers meet and this made the land attractive to early settlers. The first settler to the area built a log cabin which served as a general store and trading post around 1869. Acquiring the land from the U.S. Land Office; he named the settlement after his wife. The log cabin is still standing and is part of a museum complex. The railroad did not come until the early 1880's and by the turn of the century, the the Santa Fe and the Frisco rairoads had stations in town. The railroads spurred the growth of livestock production and increased agriculture in the area. Further growth in Augusta occurred with the discovery of oil and natural gas in Butler county
