About the area |
The Butler County History Center and Kansas Oil Museum has exhibits dedicated to three groups; the original inhabitants of Kansas, the farmers, the ranchers and the oil industry in Kansas. In the main building you can find exhibits dedicated to Butler Countyâs pre-historic and Native American life and photographs and artifacts of farming and ranching. The exhibits present diplays which show the dedication of each of these groups to the land. The original settlers in their utilization of the land, the farmers who set the countyâs agricultural identity and the ranchers who grazed their cattle on the rich native bluestem grasses of the Flint Hills. The Kansas Oil Museum building is dedicated to the discovery and development of the of the oil industry in Kansas which began in the 1860's. Here there are indoor exhibits displaying items representative of the history of the industry and a hands-on children's area, the Texaco Theater and the Kansas Oil and Gas Legacy Gallery. There is also an outdoor exhibit area with Historic oil field equipment and historic buildings. There is full size oil field equipment some of which in working condition are operated during special events and tours. The Oil Boom Town is a reconstructed section of a typical oil town street uses historic buildings to interpret the 1920s which highlights the social history of the "oil patch |
