About the area

Protection owes its name to either of two circumstances. It might have been the collection of the citizens of the area to protect themselves from an Indian uprising which turned out to be a hoax or form the protective tariff of the period 1880 to 1890. Strangely enough the reason for the name might well have applied to the selection by the National Polio Foundation of the city as the center for the free distribution of Salk vaccine shots for polio from 1955 to 1956.
