About the area
The town has two very interesting museums. Like Girard this town has its historical museum known as the Crawford County Historical Museum -Pittsburg. The exhibits here include several replicas of the old mining camps and mining operations in Crawford County and a large steam shovel used in the Weir-Pittsburg Coalfield. There are several old buildings relocated to the museum for preservation. In addition the museum hosts two events everyone likes each year; the Southeast Kansas Old Time Gas Engine and Tractor Show in June and the Southeast Kansas Old Time Gas Engine and Tractor Show in October. The Franklin Community Center & Heritage Museum has on display memorials to Veterans, Mining, the Amazon Army, local schools and churches as well as the rebuilding from the tornado of 2003. You might also want to visit the Miner’s Memorial and Immigrant Park which pays homage to immigrants who settled in Southeast Kansas and worked in the Weir-Pittsburg Coalfields.
