About the area |
One of the earliest settlers in Hope, came from from Watertown, Wisconsin around 1860 and barely escaped conscription by the Confederate forces from Missouri. Continuing West, this family settled at a spot on Turkey Creek, in Banner Township and built a log cabin on the site. The patriarch of the family was a butcher, something of a dentist, raised grapes and apples and was a pioneer ministers as well. The family helped to establish this community. Wiuth favorable treatment shown to Civil War veterans under the Homestead Act of 1862; around 1871, a group of about forty Michigan veterans and craftsmen settled in the immediate area of what would become Hope and began to plan a town site.
