About the area
The establishment of the town of Highland is due mainly to the efforts of a Presbyterian missionary from Pennsylvania. Around 1827 he established the Iowa, Sac and Fox Indian Mission part of which still stands East of Highland at the Native American Heritage Museum. He also erected the first structure on what is now the campus of Highland Community College. This building, Irvin Hall, is still in use and is listed on the Historic American Building Survey. The Native American Heritage Museum has exhibits featuring Native American culture, history and folk art. The interactive dislays permit visitors to learn of the stories of Native Americans such as the Iowa and the Sac and Fox.
