About the area
Spearville started as a town on the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad when land was was deeded by the Santa Fe to the Arkansas Valley Town Company, one of the companies organized by railroad officials to promote the town, around 1873. The town company surveyed and laid out the town lots for sale to settlers. However, the town's first permanent residents were the Santa Fe section foreman and his family who opened a eating house, mainly for the accommodation of the section hands. At the time this section house and the water tank with a stone foundation, where the foreman was stationed, was the only sign of habitation in the area. From this pioneer beginning to where Spearville now has a wind farm, the first large scale wind facility in Kansas to be owned and operated by a regulated electric utility.
