About the area |
The city was named after the Kansas governor who was in office when the town took its name. Anthony was first established around 1878. Possibly due to the high quality of the city water supply it was able to attract many businesses; so that by 1880 there were such enterprises as banking institutions, a hardware store, grocery store, drug store, post office, butcher shop, blacksmith shop, saloon, furniture store, bakery, lawyer office, real estate office, general contractors, carpenter shop, and a masonry shop. The city has a municipal swimming pool and a nine hole golf course. The Anthony Lake, just to the Northwest of the city, has facilities for boating and fishing and cabin sites along the lake which can be rented. There are over 400 recreational acres here with a trailer park, picnic tables, shelter houses, Horse Shoe Pits, playground equipment, restrooms and showers, sand volleyball courts and a walking trail.
