About the area |
Around 1856 a train of six covered wagons, sponsored by the Kansas Society of Milwaukee, departed from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to join groups from the North and East to insure another free state for the union. They arrived at Elk Creek, west of present day Holton. Crossing the creek over a bridge they built, they arrived in the vicinity of the present city, liked the creek, the present Banner Creek and the pleasant grassy hills and decided to stay. The area was surveyed , layed out and named Holton. The annual Fall Fest is held each October. Besides the Farmer's market, Salsa making contest, Jalapeno eating contest, Pie baking contest, Pie eating contest and Scarecrow contest; there is live entertainment, Lost arts demonstrations and a Ranch Rodeo. |
