| About the area |
The town of Winchester can be said to have begun around 1854 when the first settler laid claim to a parcel of land in the area and settled his family in a cabin there. His sale of part of the land provided the site for a hotel which was on the route of the old military road. The hotel's business increased rapidly spurring growth of the settlement and soon afterward other settlers followed and established stores and the settlement attracted its first physician.
