About the area
An early settler laid his claim to the area of Spring Hill around 1857. That same year, a two story structure, the Spring Hill Hotel, was built. This was the first building in town and maybe it was quickly built to accomodate the brides the early settlers sought by advertising in Eastern newspapers. The first alfalfa grown in Kansas was planted in this city. Expansion in population and commerce came to Spring Hill in the early 1870's. The residents and businessmen of the town not wishing to ugrade the land to bring the Missouri River, Fort Scott and Gulf Railroad through town; proceeded to move the downtown district one-half mile east to meet the new rail line.
