About the area |
Greensburg was established in the late late 1880's and named for the owner of "The Cannonball Stageline." which blazed trails which railroads and highways later followed. SAround 1887 work was begun on what was to become the the world's largest hand dug well to provide water for the steam engines of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe and Chicato, Rock Island and Pacific Railroads. It became a tourist attraction where visitors to descend to the bottom of the well. An adjacent museum was built, which displayed a 1000-pound Pallasite Meteorite, until the museum was done in by the tornado of 2007. The museum is now under reconstruction. |
