If you were one of the early settlers you might have been one of the six who were incorporated as the Mound Valley Town Company, so named for the ranges of mound like hills to the West, who laid out the town in 1869. The first building was erected in the same year to serve as the company office, a town hall and on the ground floor, a general store. In the 1920's the town, funded by its citizens, put up a fifty foot flagpole in the center of the business district. This subsequently led the Flagpole Festival held each year on the weekend before July Fourth. Besides the Chili cookoff and the Most Patriotic Yard competition there is the Flagpole King and Queen competition and many other activities.
